Age Appropriate Chores for Kids List

Here’s a list of some chore ideas I put together for kids, based on age range. Great inspiration for a chore chart! This can be a good starting point, but I think you also need to consider your child’s physical ability and maturity when assigning chores. I would also strongly consider what they like / don’t like doing when assigning chores.

5 & Under Chore Ideas

  • Pick up toys
  • Making bed
  • Dusting
  • Feeding pets
  • Sorting laundry
  • Put dishes away

Ages 6 – 9 Chore Ideas

All of the above plus:

  • Sweep or vacuum (if they can manage your sweeper)
  • Swiffer or spray mop
  • Wipe bathroom sink / vanity
  • Clean windows & mirrors
  • Walk / care for pets
  • Empty trash
  • Load & unload dishwasher

Ages 10+ Chore Ideas

All of the above plus:

  • Wash, dry & fold laundry
  • Mow the lawn (use your own judgement about this and always supervise them!)
  • Clean toilets
  • Supervise younger siblings (based on maturity level)
  • Help with meal prep
  • Empty trash
  • Load & unload dishwasher

Remember, these are just some ideas! Always keep in mind your child’s own unique maturity and responsibility level. Not all kids are capable of chores at the same age. Use your judgement of what you child is capable of, and be sure to always give them a training period with new chores. I have always supervised my kids with more difficult chores, until I was confident they could handle the job independently.

I hope this list helped you think of chores for your own kids. I would LOVE to hear what jobs your kids help with in the comments below!
